Q: My parcel has not arrived; usually it is here in 2-3 days.
A: First check with your local post office. Large parcels are often held for you to pick up. Australia Post should send you a card asking you to come in but we have found this is not always the case. Most parcels are delivered within 2-3 days but they can take up to 10 working days to arrive depending on your area. Adding the registered post option at checkout allows for tracking. This is the safest option and highly recommended by us. Please contact us on 1300 559 309 for help.

Q: What is SSL technology?
A: Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data – a public key known to everyone and a private key known only to the recipient of the message. Both Netscape Navigator and internet Explorer support SSL. Mama Aum uses the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. SSL protocol has been approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a standard.

Q: How can I dispose of a disposable nappy to help the environment?
A: Approximately 90% of babies in Australia use disposable nappies at least part time, many of those full time. That’s a huge amount of waste in landfill. You can do your part to help reduce this waste by:

  • Emptying faeces into the toilet before disposal (for a new born use biodegradable nappy liners as faeces is hard to remove).
  • Remove plastic outer and tabs and throw away.
  • Cotton pulp from the nappy can be composted or buried in the garden.
  • If you use nappy bags make sure they are biodegradable plastic or cellophane. We recommend Nature child bio bags.
  • Alternatively use Safeties Nature Nappies. The worlds first 100% biodegradable and guilt free disposable nappy will break down within 8 months in land fill when placed inside the provided bags.

Q: Why should I buy hemp?
A: Hemp fabric has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, preventing mould or mildew from growing on it, which makes it the perfect fabric for nappies.

  • Hemp requires no herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or fertiliser to grow (unlike cotton), so it is more environmentally friendly to grow and safer to use on sensitive skin.
  • Hemp is more absorbent than cotton so less fabric is needed, resulting in less bulky but more effective nappies and boosters.
  • Hemp is 10 times stronger than cotton and is therefore much more durable.
  • Hemp fabrics become softer with age and through use.
  • Hemp is a porous fibre, meaning hemp fabric breathes - making it cool to wear in the summer and warm in the winter.
  • In case you're wondering - there is virtually no THC in industrial hemp - hemp that is grown for manufacturing fabric will not get you high!

Q: Why should I buy organic cotton?
A: Conventional cotton is the most heavily pesticide intensive crop grown in the world. All synthetic fabrics are manufactured from petroleum derivatives. Most fabrics used today are not very earth-friendly. Finished goods made from polyester, nylon, etc. are generally cheap, due to artificially maintained low petroleum prices, the actual cost to the environment of acquiring, transporting, refining and manufacturing these materials is enormous.

Today's pesticides are very effective. However, to be as effective as they are, they're extraordinarily strong, and long lived. The havoc they wreak after they do their job is daunting. They pollute the ground for years, draining it of natural nutrients, forcing the use of more, and more dangerous, fertilizers and eventually making it unsuitable for farming use. This is the heart of "unsustainable" agriculture. The pesticides eventually leech into and pollute the groundwater, making its way to our water supply causing many health problems.

  • Most conventional cotton is chlorine bleached; creating harmful dioxins
  • Buying Organic Cotton products helps you avoid all the problems mentioned above.
  • No chemicals are used
  • The workers who produce it are paid a fair wage
  • The more organic cotton is used the less conventional cotton is grown
  • Organic Cotton is buttery-soft, and gets even softer with each washing. It's stronger and more durable than most other fabrics.
  • Organic Cotton is an investment in our children's future!

Q: What is fair trade?
A: "Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers - especially in the South. Fair Trade organizations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade."

Q: Why fair trade?
A: International trade has been a historical link between peoples of the world. It can be used to increase corporate profits without benefit to the wider community and to promote intercultural understanding, grassroots development and economic justice.

The advantages of current international trade practices are not visible to all people in the world.

For small farmers, access to market or price information is difficult and as a result, many become increasingly dependent on middlemen and receive smaller and smaller returns for their work. In bad times, many lose their only property - their land - and thus, their livelihoods.

Similarly many plantation workers endure low pay, unsafe working environments and poor living conditions. Too often they lack the opportunity to participate in decisions that affect their lives on the plantation. The way that many products are produced, traded and consumed is simply unjust; this is a major cause of continuing world poverty.

Fair Trade is an alternative approach to conventional trade. It is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing rights of, marginalised producers and workers - especially in low-income regions.

Fair Trade is about giving disadvantaged people power: by paying producers and workers fair prices for their work, by helping them gain the skills and knowledge they need to develop their businesses and to operate in the global economy, and by challenging unfair trading practices. It is about providing a fair go, not charity.

Q: What is Genetic Modification GMO?
A: Genetic modification is a technique where individual genes can be copied and transferred to another living organism. It changes the genetic makeup by adding or removing specific characteristics.

GM crops are plants that have been genetically altered to improve resistance to diseases caused by insects or viruses and to increase tolerance towards herbicides or extreme weather conditions. One of the best known examples is GM Soya which is tolerant to the herbicide glyphosate. It allows for better weed control and fewer lost plants. Supporters of GM technology say it will lower costs, increase yields, decrease the need for chemicals and help to feed a hungry world.

Opponents are concerned about the health risks and the threat to the environment and say not enough studies have been done to prove it is safe and will not harm natural species. Mama Aum will not stock any product containing GM ingredients until there is proof that they do no harm to us or our environment. For more information visit www.greenpeace.com.au
